Along with Columbia, the ship was stationed at Starbase 1 in 2156 when five Romulan warbirds attacked the station, beginning the Earth-Romulan War. Fleet Captain Erika Hernandez of Columbia ordered Excalibur to flee the battle and warn Starfleet. Captain Stiles obeyed, but the ship was chased down by the faster Romulans and was lost with all hands except for Bryce Shumar, the ship’s first officer, who left via a shuttlepod and warned Starfleet. The USS Excalibur (NCC-1664) was a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. The vessel took on the name of a previous vessel, Rollin Bannock‘s USS Excalibur, of several years earlier. Excalibur was commanded by Captain Harris in the 2260s, and was a participant in the M-5 war games simulation of 2268. (TOS episode: “The Ultimate Computer“)

Excalibur was constructed and commissioned at Tranquility Base, Luna. (ST reference: Ships of the Line)

In the early 2250s the Excalibur was part of a squadron composed of the USS Enterprise and USS Hood sent to the Borderlands to investigate the destruction of Starbase 18 , which was believed to have been attacked by the Klingons. (TOS novel: The Children of Kings)

Prior to 2265, the Excalibur was the second Federation starship to encounter the N’shaii and their satellites in orbit of Velarrh VII. Thanks to data gathered during the USS Constitution‘s encounter with them in 2257, the Excalibur was well equipped to deal with the threat. Some time later, the Excalibur encountered the N’shaii for a second time, this time operating in orbit of Linyar II. (TOS – My Brother’s Keeper novel: Constitution)

At a unspecified point prior to the M-5 war games, Daniel Paris served on the Excalibur and distinguished himself on the ship. (STA novel: Progenitor).

In 2266, the ship was assigned a seven-month patrol of the Romulan Neutral Zone. After this patrol, the Excalibur was allowed a two-week shore leave at Argelius II. (TOS – Who’s Who in Star Trek comics: “Who’s Who in Star Trek, Issue 1“, “Who’s Who in Star Trek, Issue 2“)

In 2267, the Excalibur was one of the starships assigned to assist the USS Enterprise at the inauguration ceremonies on Altair VI. (TOS – Star Trek 3 novelization: Amok Time)

While not actually mentioned by name in the episode, an earlier draft of the script that was later turned into a novelization by James Blish included this data.

A few months later, the Excalibur, under the command of Captain Anton Harris, along with the USS Lexington, responded to a distress call from the Enterprise after it became trapped in a black hole, TNC 65813, following a battle with Colonel Adrik Thorsen and his followers. The Excalibur and the Lexington towed the powerless Enterprise to the nearest Federation starbase on Neural III. (ST novel: Federation)

Also in 2267 the Excalibur was assigned to Sector 221-G and surveyed the planet Priatia. At this point, the commanding officer was Anton Harris. This was one of Excalibur’s last missions, a few months before the disastrous M5 war games in 2268. This was also during the time before the Thallonian Empire became very aggressive about keeping outsiders away. (NF novel: After the Fall)

In early 2268, Excalibur relieved the USS Enterprise at the Beta Cabrini mining colony. Excalibur brought a security contingent and equipment to rig defense systems for the colony. (TOS novel: Legacy)

In 2268 the Excalibur took part in the disastrous M-5 multitronic computer tests. The Excalibur, along with the Lexington, Hood, and Potemkin, participated in war games to test the computer’s reflexes while it was installed aboard the Enterprise. The computer went insane, however, and fired full weapons on the Excalibur, reducing the ship to a powerless hulk and killing her entire 400-odd crew. A second Constitution-class USS Excalibur II was commissioned, named in honor of this vessel’s sacrifice.

The USS Excalibur II (alternately registered as NCC-1711, NCC-1788 and NCC-1705) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. The Federation Ship Recognition Manual referred to this vessel as being registered NCC-1711, while the Star Trek IV Sourcebook mentioned the vessel being NCC-1788. Starfleet Command later assigned the vessel registry NCC-1705.

History

This is the second Constitution class vessel to hold the name Excalibur, replacing the ship lost in 2268.

The Excalibur II was refit to the Enterprise-subclass specifications, outfitted as a command cruiser (CC), by the 2280s decade.

USS Excalibur (NCC-2004)

The USS Excalibur (NCC-2004) was an Excelsior-class battleship in service to Starfleet in the 23rd and 24th centuries.

The Excalibur‘s first mention in TNG episode: “The Measure of a Man“‘s starship deploy status chart gave it the registry NCC-21534. The novel Foreign Foes gives the registry as NCC-42252.

The vessel was captained for several years by Captain Morgen, the hereditary ruler of the planet Daa’V, until Morgen returned home in early 2367 to assume the planetary throne after the death of his father. (TNG novel: Reunion)

In early 2368, while the vessel was in between ‘official’ captains, Commander William T. Riker briefly commanded the ship during the brief Klingon Civil War. Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge served as Riker’s first officer. (TNG episode: “Redemption II“)

Following the war, command of the Excalibur was given to Captain Morgan Korsmo, following the destruction of his previous vessel, the USS Chekov, by the Borg in late 2367. Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Shelby, following Korsmo from the Chekov, was assigned to the Excalibur as first officer. (TNG novel: Vendetta; NF short story: “Pain Management“)

The ST video game: Starship Creator: Warp depicts Korsmo in command of the Excalibur as early as 2362. This would seem to be a contradiction with Korsmo’s command of the Chekov, unless he commanded the Chekov in between two separate assignments to the Excalibur.

In 2369, the Excalibur stopped at Starbase Deep Space 9 before embarking on a diplomatic mission to Vigan Delta V. Later that year, the Excalibur encountered Borg Cube 45208 and a number of Excalibur personnel were assimilated, including Lieutenant Marika Wilkarah, who had served on Excalibur for just over a year. Following the vessel’s refit, command of the Excalibur was given to Captain Mackenzie Calhoun, who was assigned to offer assistance and humanitarian aid to the residents of sector 221G, the former Thallonian Empire. (NF novels: House of Cards, Into the Void)

Soon after beginning her mission, the Excalibur answered a distress call from the freighter Cambon and assisted in repairs. This eventually led to the Excalibur being at the forefront of a hostage situation on the Nelkarite homeworld when a Nelkarite leader was willing to let the hostages and thousands of her own people die if the Federation did not meet her demands. The Excalibur went to meet with members of crew that had responded to a distress call from the freighter Kayven Ryin. Upon arrival, debris of the Kayvin Ryin and the shuttlecraft USS Marquand was found. The Excalibur followed an ion trail to the planet Thallon, where the vessel rescued a thousand Thallonians before the planet was destroyed by the hatching of the Great Bird of the Galaxy. The Excalibur traveled to Zondar, where Calhoun was seen as the planet’s foretold savior. The Excalibur defended Zondar from the approach of the Redeemers, a race of religious extremists who believed in the conversion of planetary populations to the worship of their God, Xant, or, failing conversion, death to the world’s population. The Excalibur stayed at Zondar for a time so that Lieutenant Soleta could perform some archeological research. The Excalibur soon received orders to travel to Momidium and retrieve Lieutenant Robin Lefler‘s mother, Morgan Primus, who had been imprisoned there for five years for trespassing.

The Excalibur next went to the planet Ahmista, where the crew had an encounter with the powerful beings known as the Prometheans, whose weaponry, in the hands of the insane Tarella Lee, was used to annihilate Ahmista’s native population. The Excalibur soon met with the USS Seidman to transfer the casualties. (NF novel: Fire on High)

The Excalibur stayed on assignment in Sector 221-G during the opening days of the Dominion War. In mid-2374, the Excalibur attempted a time-traveling “slingshot” maneuver, and found themselves 18 months past their starting date. The TNG video game: Bridge Commander portrays Captain William Morrison as being in command of the Excalibur in 2374. This is in contradiction with the New Frontier series, although at least at one other point during Calhoun’s command was he reassigned temporarily, by Will Riker.

2375–2376

The Excalibur emerged from her time-traveling adventure in late 2375, in the closing days of the Dominion War. (NF short story: “Stone Cold Truths“)

Soon after the end of the war, Excalibur saved the survivors of the USS Independence, including passenger William T. Riker, from an attack by a trio of Romulan warbirds. The Excalibur warped to Deep Space 4, where Admiral Alynna Nechayev placed Riker in temporary command of the Excalibur, while Calhoun went on special assignment.

The Excalibur went to Narobi II to investigate reports of Romulans working with the Narobians. Once there, the Excalibur was disabled by a Narobian virus and the Romulans boarded the ship, but the Excalibur crew was able to retake the vessel.

The Excalibur then went to General Gerrid Thul‘s Dyson Sphere and was able to rescue Captain Calhoun and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, where they were both on undercover assignments. (TNG novel: Double or Nothing)

In late 2375, the Excalibur sent the shuttlecraft Marquand II to the planet Montos on a diplomatic mission, where the away team encountered Kalinda, the missing sister of Ambassador Si Cwan, and Captain Calhoun’s son, Xyon, who was in command of the small vessel, the Lyla.

The Excalibur tracked the Marquand and the Lyla to the Quiet Place and rescued her wayward crew members from the Dogs of War and the Redeemers. (NF novel: The Quiet Place)

Soon after, the Excalibur went to the planet Fennar to stop a Redeemer attack on the planet. Captain Calhoun reluctantly decided to help the Redeemers stop the Black Mass, a voracious entity that consumed entire solar systems and was heading directly for the Redeemer homeworld. Soon after, the Excalibur engaged the Black Mass, but was overwhelmed and had to retreat. The Excalibur and the Lyla lured the Black Mass into a black hole, which destroyed most of the insatiable entity. Soon afterwards, the Excalibur was destroyed by a Narobian virus that was planted in the ship’s computer during the Double Helix crisis. Captain Calhoun was presumed to be killed in the explosion. USS Excalibur (NCC-26517-A)

History

2376

The Excalibur‘s construction started after the second Borg invasion of the Federation using some older systems from previous vessels.

The command crew of the original Excalibur was present when the vessel was commissioned. The Excalibur-A was originally to be under the command of Captain Elizabeth Shelby, but she relinquished command after the dramatic reappearance of the believed-to-be-dead Mackenzie Calhoun, the captain of the previous Excalibur.

Shortly after the vessels dedication, Captains Calhoun and Shelby were married on the bridge of the Excalibur-A’ in a ceremony presided over by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. (NF – Excalibur novel: Restoration)

The Excalibur-A’s first assignment found her in the middle of the Gateways Crisis, and inbetween two warring species, the Markanians and the Aerons. (GAT – Gateways novel: Cold Wars)

Soon after, the Excalibur was sent to investigate unusual energy signatures in Zone 18 Alpha. There, the Excalibur encountered the Beings, who claimed to be ancient Earth gods. The Excalibur’s saucer section was equipped with warp drive and left the system while the stardrive section battled the Being’s and was heavily damaged. The Excalibur was one of the ships to respond to the Borg invasion of the Alpha Quadrant. Leading a Task Group of eight ships, Captain Calhoun joined up with the USS Enterprise-E and deferred command to that starship. It joined the battle near Earth. (TNG novel: Before Dishonor)

During the invasion of the Borg Collective in 2381, Starbase 343 was one of five simultaneous attacks along with bases 157 and 234 and the planets of Khitomer and Korvat. The Excalibur protected the base during the battle, and attempted to reproduce the phase inverter technique the USS Ranger used, but the Borg had already adapted; instead, they used the same technology to augment torpedoes and destroyed the cube. The Excalibur signaled an all-clear, but was heavily crippled and unable to rendezvous with the Enterprise at the Azure Nebula. (ST – Destiny novel: Gods of Night) After the engagement, Starfleet Command had evidence indicating that the Borg had adapted to this attack, and its use was therefore dismissed by a think tank that included Seven of Nine.
