Starfleet Task Force 31—The North American Star Trek Fan Club—models its structure after the Starfleet organization seen throughout Star Trek media. In the Trek universe, Starfleet serves as the exploratory and defensive arm of the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet Task Force 31 embraces that spirit of exploration, building its framework around curiosity, discovery, and adventure.

Starfleet Task Force 31 Is Its Chapters
Starfleet Task Force 31 is organized into a few dozen chapters across the United States and around the North American continent. These chapters—each named after a starship or space station—are where members gather, build friendships, and enjoy the fun of fandom together.
Chapters vary in size and style. Some meet in person, while others operate as correspondence chapters, connecting through email, phone, and traditional mail. No matter the format, every chapter offers a welcoming crew.
Starfleet Task Force 31 Is Its Sectors
Chapters are grouped into Sectors, each covering a specific geographic area. Sectors often host larger gatherings—conferences, celebrations, charity events, and more—bringing multiple crews together for shared adventures.
A Chain of Command Inspired by Star Trek
Just like in the shows we love, Starfleet Task Force 31 uses a structured chain of command:
- Each chapter is led by a Commanding Officer and First Officer
- Chapters report to Sector Chiefs
- Sector Chiefs form the Board of Directors
- An elected Fleet Operations Command oversees the organization
This structure ensures fairness, accountability, and support for every member.
Members may also choose to receive a rank and earn promotions through participation at the chapter, regional, or fleet level. New members often begin as Cadets or Ensigns and can rise through the ranks—Lieutenant, Commander, Captain, and beyond—based on involvement and service.
Costuming: Encouraged, Never Required
Many members enjoy wearing Star Trek uniforms or costumes at conventions, meetings, and special events—but it’s always optional. Whether you suit up as your favorite character or simply wear a great Star Trek T‑shirt, the goal is to have fun and celebrate together.
Flexible Membership Options
You can be a member of Starfleet Task Force 31 without joining a chapter, and you can join a chapter without joining Starfleet Task Force 31. Some chapters have their own dues separate from the Task Force 31 no dues membership, and fans are free to choose whichever option fits their interests.
